To guide and replicate the work of choosing and establishing these regional training sites, the More in Common Alliance created a detailed Undergraduate Medical Education Playbook, with tactical resources all the way down to checklists and forms for each step along the way, as outlined here:
- Hospital site identification
Analyze and discuss CSH hospital location and community that would best fit and benefit from MSM academic and educational programs in term of mission alignment, learning environment, and shared value of diversity workforce for the region/community. - Educational programming development
Discuss and determine what the hospital is best able to support in terms of education level, specialty areas, and rotation experience. - Program planning and course preparation
Identify and convene key contacts to develop all aspects of education infrastructure including staff, technology, housing, credentialing, leadership, and curriculum. - Preceptor identification and faculty appointment
Select, assess, and credential preceptors in selected specialties as MSM faculty in alignment with facility needs, involving them in refinement of course curriculum. - Community inclusion
Engage and partner with members of local health care, education, public benefit, and media organizations early and thoroughly through introductory events, community health fairs, joint participation at local high schools and community centers, and health clinics. - Student enrollment
Develop course information, scheduling, and documentation structure to solicit enrollment and orient students to CSH facility and community. - Student onboarding
Introduce students to the other students, staff, faculty, syllabus, schedule, housing, community, and facility culture of their CSH rotation facility. - Student orientation
Continue acclimatization process with personalized welcoming and community resource introductions, followed by regular check-ins. - Student and faculty assessment
Facilitate mutual assessment and evaluation between students and faculty at completion of each rotation. - Program evaluation and continuous quality improvement
Analyze anonymized and aggregated assessment data to identify and report opportunities for improvement in compliance with LCME and The Joint Commission requirements and toward future growth and expansion.
Content of this playbook, as well as that of a corresponding guide for establishing graduate medical education sites, is being assessed and refined as the process is followed at each new regional training site.
